Costers Del Segre Wine

The Costers del Segre denomination of origin, created in 1988, is located in the province of Lleida and is divided into 6 sub-areas: Les Garrigues, Pallars Jussà, Artesa, Corb River Valley, Segrià and Raimat. Each of them differs from the others as regards the grapes produced, the climate and the soil. Although most of the soil is highly calcareous, these are poor soils, with little clay and big quantities of limestone. The climate is continental, but with scarce rains, and sometimes affected by frost and hail. The difference in temperature in Costers del Segre is great, and range from below zero in winter to very hot summers.

The main white grape varieties used are: Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo and Xarel·lo. Other authorized strains are: Riesling, Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc. The blend of foreign grapes and native grapes produces wines with a clear personality. The red varieties are: Ull de llebre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Garnacha negra, Merlot, Trepat, Samsó and Monastrell.

The Costers del Segre DO is still young and has evolved considerably since its creation, by introducing new grape varieties and sub-areas, increasing its prestige and recognition both in Spain and abroad.
